Comments Form Not Showing In WordPress? Try This Easy Solution

comments form not showing in wordpress

If you’ve tried everything but still can’t get the comment form to show up under your posts in WordPress try this one-step solution.

Coming back from a month-long Eastern European trip, DM and I (mostly I 🙄) were super motivated and inspired to revamp THT’s theme.

Again.

And everything went relatively smoothly (go ahead and browse around, we’re bringin’ sexy back) until I realized the single post template was not displaying the leave-a-comment form 😳

Not cool.

How are we supposed to communicate with our lovely readers (even if most of ’em our spamy bots)?

Turns out a simple Google search of “missing comment form in wordpress posts” wasn’t going to prove helpful.

Why?

Because everything suggested was already checked and/or unchecked per the advice of all the online experts.

The worst thing about a problem is when every solution proposed doesn’t do a damn thing 😒

What online experts said about a missing comments form

Most solutions out there tell you to check settings in three particular areas:

  1. WordPress:
Under Settings ->> Discussion ->> Default post settings ->> make sure “Allow people to submit comments on new posts” is checked.
WordPress discussion settings allow comments.
  1. Jetpack:
Navigate to Jetpack ->> Settings ->> Discussion ->> toggle on “Let visitors use a WordPress.com, Twitter, or Facebook account to comment”.
Jetpack discussion settings comments form.

Note 🤓

Toggling on the Jetpack comments form automatically replaces the theme form for us!

If you’re not getting the comments form you expect, there might be a conflict between the Jetpack comments form and your theme comments form.

  1. Theme:
This is particular to your theme. Use your theme’s support forum or available documentation under Customize to set comment form settings.

Unfortunately, all suggested settings were turning on the comments form but still, nothing was displaying.

Ugh.

How we got the comments form to show

Now, for the sweet part. I ran into a post that said to check WordPress’ automation system for comments.

I didn’t even know what that was.

But all I needed to do to get the comments form to show was uncheck “Automatically close comments on posts older than XX days” 🥁

WordPress discussion comments automatic system.

That setting is found under the WordPress Settings ->> Discussion ->> Other comment settings.

Once I unchecked that little square the comments form appeared proudly under single posts!

Tip

Make sure the other site settings in WordPress and under your theme (or Jetpack, if you opt for that form) are also turned.
