A Smart Free Chrome Extension That Upgrades AI Prompts

I built a smart, free Google Chrome extension that does prompt engineering by upgrading your AI prompts with a single click.

Note: The Chrome Extension is now updated offering “Guest Mode” with 5 free prompt generations per day. Additional updates in UI, enhancements in suggestions prompts, and minor fixes are also released. If you downloaded the earlier version of the extension, time to upgrade 😉

Have you recently typed a question into ChatGPT, Gemini, or any AI tool and ended up with something you totally didn’t mean?

Staring at an AI-generated answer that’s technically correct but totally misses the point isn’t new. Maybe the response is too vague. Maybe it rambles. Maybe it skips over context you thought was obvious.

Now, this won’t make anyone happy, but let’s face it: The issue usually isn’t the AI—it’s the prompt.

Why Prompts Matter More Than You Think

Prompt engineering this and prompt engineering that—I’d be amazed if you haven’t heard or come across the term.

Prompting has quietly become one of the most valuable skills in the AI era to the point where companies hire “prompt engineers”. These are professionals 🤓

Despite being all the rage, prompt engineering is also one of the least understood AI skills of high value. Most people were never taught how to write a clear, specific, high-context request that helps an AI deliver its best work.

And honestly, why should they have to when you can easily have AI structure the prompt it needs to give you a good answer?

Nevertheless, the inability to craft prompts (i.e., asking typically badly worded, jumbled, and obscure questions) that give the answers we want alienates people. It makes them feel like they just don’t know how to use “it”.

That’s why I built Prompt Optimizer, a Chrome extension that helps you turn rough ideas into polished, high-performance prompts. It bridges the gap between what you mean and what the AI understands.

In this post, I’ll walk you through what it does, why it matters, and how to install and start using it. By the end, you’ll be ready to get sharper, more creative, and more useful responses without changing the way you already work.

Note 📝
The current version of Prompt Optimizer is an early MVP. It can be refined with further iterations and made even more personal for specific use-cases. Prompt engineering needs to evolve in conjunction with AI!

The Real Problem is that We’re Asking AI the Wrong Way

Most disappointing AI answers aren’t because the model’s “bad” but because we didn’t tell it what we really wanted.

Here are the three most common prompt mistakes:

1. Too vague: You ask, “Write a marketing email,” and expect a brilliant response. Instead, the AI gives you something bland and generic because it has no tone or context to work with.

2. Too complicated: You paste a long, tangled paragraph full of contradictions. The AI tries to juggle it all and sometimes goes onto its own tangent of made-up information.

3. Too open-ended: You ask, “What’s a good strategy?” without saying who it’s for, what it’s about, or what constraints exist.

The result is output that sounds okay but actually doesn’t help. Prompt Optimizer aims to fix that automatically.

What Prompt Optimizer Does

Prompt Optimizer sits quietly in your browser, improving your prompts before they ever reach the AI with that question. Think of it like a writing assistant for your prompts. You write naturally, and it upgrades your prompt into a version that’s clearer, more detailed, and more effective.

You don’t need to learn any frameworks or memorize examples. Just highlight what you’ve written (or type it), click a button, and an improved version appears right beside it, ready to copy, inject, or use instantly.

Why It Matters

AI tools are powerful, but most people only tap into a fraction of what they can do. Prompt Optimizer helps close that gap by:

  • Saving time: No more bouncing between tabs, tweaking prompts, or rephrasing over and over before you even get to a response for the ask.
  • Improving results: You’ll consistently get responses that are clearer, more relevant, and more creative.
  • Fitting your workflow: Works anywhere you write: Gmail, Notion, Docs, Twitter, or even ChatGPT itself. (At least, it aims to. Keep in mind, this is an early MVP 😅)
  • Teaching as you go: Seeing side-by-side improvements helps you learn what great prompting looks like, and you become more intuitively attuned.
  • Keeping your data safe: Your API keys stay local and can be encrypted with a passphrase.

It’s not just for developers or “AI people.” Writers, students, marketers, researchers—anyone who talks to AI—will find it useful right away.

The Big Idea is to Make Prompt Engineering Invisible

When I started building this, my goal was simple: make prompt optimization feel natural to the point it’s almost invisible.

AI should feel like a fluent collaborator, not something you have to outsmart with tricky wording. One way Prompt Optimizer does this is by integrating directly into your browser and adapting to your workflow.

It gives you two main ways to interact:

  • The Popup Prompt Pad: a focused space to draft and refine prompts from scratch.
  • The Floating In-Page Toolbar: a lightweight assistant that appears right where you’re typing.

Let’s go through both quickly.

Installing Prompt Optimizer (Early Access Setup)

This MVP release installs manually for now (until it’s live on the Chrome Web Store). The process takes about a minute:

  1. Get the files: Download the extension folder (usually called dist).
  2. Open Chrome’s extensions page: Type chrome://extensions in your address bar and hit Enter.
  3. Enable Developer Mode: Toggle it on in the top-right corner.
  4. Load the extension: Click “Load unpacked”, select your dist folder, and you’ll see Prompt Optimizer appear.
  5. Pin it: Click the puzzle icon in your toolbar, find Prompt Optimizer, and pin it. Look for the purple “P” icon.

That’s it! The Prompt Optimizer extension is now active.

Setting Up Your AI Connection

Before using the optimizer, connect it to your AI provider (OpenAI or Gemini are currently supported). Think of this like linking your remote to your streaming service.

  1. Click the Prompt Optimizer icon.
  2. Open the Options page: Right-click the gear icon on the top right of the popup.
  3. Add your API key:
    • For OpenAI: platform.openai.com
    • For Gemini: ai.google.dev/gemini-api Paste your key, hit Validate, and you’re set. Tip: Click the little eye icon to reveal your API key and ensure your paste job hasn’t added any extra characters or spaces!
  4. (Optional) Encrypt your key: Add a passphrase so your key stays private.
  5. Customize your settings: Choose your default AI, theme, and enable the floating toolbar.

Click Save Settings — done.

Note ⚠️
If you’re using OpenAI, be aware that the extension uses the completions API endpoint which, as of this point, requires a user has setup payment. The validation ping uses an alternate endpoint to verify API key is active that is charge-free. So if your validation succeeds but you get a limit error, check your payment inputs on OpenAI. Otherwise, go for Gemini, it’s still primarily free!

Valid API key ping means you’re good to go
Invalid API key ping means you need to check your account

Using the Popup Prompt Pad

This is your personal AI scratchpad, great for drafting or refining prompts from zero.

  1. Click the Prompt Optimizer icon.
  2. Type or paste your prompt (say, “Explain how photosynthesis works.”)
  3. Click Auto-Optimize Prompt and watch it expand into a structured, detailed version designed for better results.

You’ll see a side-by-side comparison with your version on the left, the optimized one on the right. Copy, inject, or apply it instantly.

Want more control? Try the suggestion pills like:

  • Simplify and Shorten
  • Create Step-by-Step Guide
  • Convert to JSON
  • Check for Bias

Each one tailors the optimization for specific needs and is thoroughly inspired by the suggestion prompts in Google AI Studio (where I’ve been spending a little too much time on revamping my portfolio site).

Tip 💡
Try feeding back as your prompt the first optimized iteration to see how AI will optimize it’s initial response even more! Just take it easy on over-optimizing ’cause that can be a problem in itself.

Using the Floating Toolbar

Here’s where the magic happens inside your workflow:

  1. Open Gmail, Notion, ChatGPT, really anywhere you can type.
  2. Type something and highlight the text you want to improve.
  3. The floating toolbar appears automatically.
  4. Click Auto-Optimize or another option.
  5. Preview side-by-side results and click Apply to replace your text instantly.

It feels like having an AI writing assistant built right into your browser.

Under the Hood

You don’t need to be technical to use it, but here’s what’s running the show:

  • Built with: TypeScript, React, Bootstrap 5, Vite
  • Architecture: Chrome Manifest V3
  • Security: API keys stored locally, optionally encrypted
  • Design: Shadow DOM to stay clean and conflict-free

All of it works quietly behind the scenes with the goal of security, speed, and reliability. If anyone is interested in a complete technical breakdown, leave a comment 💬

Security and Privacy

Prompt Optimizer was built with privacy first. (Ok, fine, maybe that’s a lie—it was all about utility, but security was what I ended things with 🥲)

  • Your API keys never leave your device
  • No tracking, no logging, no data collection
  • All API calls go through Chrome’s background service worker
  • Optional AES-GCM encryption for your keys
  • Session-based unlocking for extra safety

Who It’s For

If you write, research, or communicate with AI (aka everyone), then this tool’s for you.

  • Writers & Marketers: Craft stronger hooks, tone, and structure.
  • Students & Researchers: Turn messy questions into clear, high-context prompts.
  • Developers: Debug, format, and document API prompts.
  • Teams: Standardize prompt templates without forcing everyone to learn prompt engineering.

Prompt Optimizer fits right into your browser with really no learning curve. In fact, it might improve your intuition and understanding of prompt engineering!
